THE INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY, DECLARED BY UN
The United Nations recognizes Yoga’s universal appeal and power to heal and harmonize human life.
The UN has declared 21st of June as the International Yoga Day, South Africa(IDY). For the past two years, yoga enthusiasts around the world have rolled out their mats from New York’s Times Square to as far as Russia, Dubai, Africa, Cambodia, France and hundreds of locations abroad.
In 2015, peace ambassador and yoga Guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of the Art of Living (AOL) inaugurated the event at the UN headquarters in New York. Mr. Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the UN and his entire staff participated in the event. In 2016, Sri Sri addressed the EU Parliament on IDY and received a standing ovation. He said, “Yoga is not about shaking your tummy. Yoga is that which shakes the world.”

The Art of Living (AOL) in partnership with the Consulate General of India, JHB brings IDY 2017 to our very own Soweto. The event expects 1000 participants to hit the mat! “The theme of International Yoga Day, South Africa 2017 is Yoga for Health. The theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body.” – United Nations.
Yoga and meditation have been proven to help participants find inner peace and harmony. Therefore, an environment of violence against women and children has a solution in yoga, which empowers people to deal with stress and anger in healthier ways.
